Health insurance is one of the biggest expenses for beer wholesalers, but few take the time to calculate their true costs, or compare them to industry benchmarks.

If you’re not measuring it, you’re likely overpaying.

Here’s how to change that.

Start by calculating your per employee per month (PEPM) health insurance cost.

Add up your total annual health insurance spend (employer + employee contributions) and divide by the number of enrolled employees, then divide by 12.

For example, if you spend $1.5 million annually on health coverage for 100 employees:

PEPM = $1,500,000 ÷ 100 ÷ 12 = $1,250

Now compare this to the average cost in the BevCap Management captive insurance model, which is $861 PEPM.

Captive insurance models consistently deliver 30–40% cost savings, along with better plan design and employee benefits.

Captives give beer wholesalers buying power, risk control, and access to claims data so you can manage—not just pay for—healthcare.

Bottom line: If your PEPM cost is north of $1,000, it’s time to explore a captive.

The savings could be the equivalent of hiring multiple full-time employees or investing in growth initiatives.
